Negotiating a deal is part art and part science. You have to be able to make the other person feel like he or she is getting something in the deal. However, you have to understand what you can give up in exchange for getting what you want. Here are five secrets to winning your next negotiation.
1) Know Exactly What You Want
It is important that you know exactly what you want to get out of any deal. If you are seeking more money, make sure that you get the raise that you want. If you are looking for exclusive rights to market a product, do not leave the negotiation until you get it.
2) Don’t Be Afraid To Say No
Saying no can be a great way to get leverage in any negotiation. Let’s say that you are negotiating with credit restoration companies on behalf of a client. You may be able to get a better deal just by saying no and making the other side work harder than they want to in an effort to close the deal. Eventually, the other party will cave.
3) Leaving The Table Can Be Effective
Sealing the deal can be much easier when you are willing to leave the negotiation. For example, a car salesman may be more willing to give you a better deal on the car you want just by saying that you will keep looking at other offers.
4) Dress For Success
Negotiators should always dress in a professional manner. If you are well dressed, others in the room will instantly show you more respect. When you garner respect from others, they will take you seriously in negotiations. Ultimately, you will get the deal that you want.
5) Use Your Voice Effectively
Using big words or speaking in a sharp voice can help you close a deal quickly. You can also use your voice to establish a friendly rapport. The combination of drawing a line in the sand while also appearing to be your adversary’s best friend can do wonders in your efforts to secure the deal that you want.
Successful negotiation doesn’t have to be difficult. All you need to do is understand what you want, gain the respect of your adversary and say no every so often. Those tactics will allow you to gain control of the situation and get the deal that you are seeking.
